BRAC 'gold rush' sets in

Real estate agents offering to help defense workers find homes. Law firms peddling their expertise in negotiating military contracts. Management and sales consultants tendering advice on how to sell to the government or contractors.

The huge nationwide military base shuffle has spawned a cottage industry of businesses and entrepreneurs hoping to cash in on the influx of up to 60,000 jobs and 28,000 households to Maryland. If the almost weekly conferences, seminars and workshops aren't enough, there are newsletters and Web sites offering the lowdown on how Maryland will be affected by the Pentagon's Base Closure and Realignment Commission's 2005 decision to shift thousands of mostly civilian, high-tech defense workers to military installations here.

The swarm of businesses around BRAC is hardly surprising.

October 2006

It defies the intent of campaign finance disclosure.

And this leads to an even greater question of Maloy's $4,010.00 in unitemized contributions. His pre-primary report shows no unitemized contributions. But for the sake of argument, we should count the "annonymous" twenty dollars as an "itemized unitemized contribution."

Since the primary, however, over four thousand dollars comes into his campaign in unitemized contributions. Adhering to the law that these must be less than $50, this would mean that at least 82 people gave him the maximum amount allowed for these not to be itemized. At the most charitable, it would be assumed that this amount came all from within the district.

On the other hand, it could be intepreted that none of this came from the district and was delivered in a suitcase. Just like in the Provincetown primary, when poll workers failed to keep track of which voters took which ballots, there's really no way of knowing.

KickSkirt finds its niche in targeting messages to women

Klaudia Flanigin, a strategic brand director who spent five years at GSD&M Idea City working as a leader on the Wal-Mart account; and Sharon Miller, a brand strategist who has worked for Converse, Gap Inc. and Whole Foods Market Inc.

"These are women who have had experience in running multimillion-dollar accounts," Dean says.

Dean's own credentials include spending five years as vice president and creative director of Publicis USA, where she led business for Curves, a franchise of women-only fitness centers.

A number of traditional agencies have women-focused marketing research or advertising divisions, but Dean believes that her all-female team gives her an edge over traditional agencies

State could lose House seat after 2010, estimates show

Louisiana appears to be rebounding from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, gaining 50,000 residents. After the storm hit in August 2005, the bureau estimated that the state lost 250,000 residents.

California remains the nation's most populous state with about 37 million people. It attracted about 300,000 new residents, second to Texas numerically, but 25th fastest by rate of growth.

The total U.S. population was estimated at 301.6 million.
