China can build things. Why can't India?

The people who may have to lose land/homes (mostly illegal) will hold demonstrations and move courts. The incompetent police will do a lathi charge in front of TV camera crews looking for some action footage. The foreign funded NGOs will say this is human rights violation. Some important sounding organizations will bestow awards on the brave "activists" taking on the "might" of the government. Communists will say this is WorldBank -IMF conspiracy. Journalists will have a field day misquoting everyone to make news spicier and convulated. After ten years no one will remember what it was all about. The Government will now announce a new highway. And the cycle will repeat. That's how democracy functions in India.

Now tell me that happens in other democracies like Japan, Korea or Taiwan.

Competitive intelligence 101

My first job out of school, many moons ago, was with a tire manufacturer in the Maritimes. I was a newly minted Queen's engineer, ready to change the world one tire at a time. They put me through their industrial engineering training program. Here's an engineering secret: no engineering discipline actually operates under the correct name. Chemical engineering is really process engineering, and so on. Industrial engineering, as it turned out, is really efficiency or cost engineering. It's about increasing production or saving money. I wrote four words on my cinder block office wall: cheaper, faster, better, more. I figured if I wasn't trying to achieve one of those outcomes, I was doing something wrong.

Anyway, one of my roles was to conduct time and motion studies on operators.

Friday wild card

It's like one of those pop up toys my kids play with. fun to watch and when it pops it's almost always a let down, not as exciting as you think it's going to be.

DFO: Jim Risch has instilled a sense of hope that something will be done about property taxes before Dec. 20 of this year. His predecessor and key members of the entrenched Idaho Legislature barely recognized that property taxes were a significant issue during the 2006 session. Now, we have a governor with insider's knowledge shaking down key senators for votes to move at least part of the school M&O off the property tax in a special session this summer. Additionally, he has embraced the GARVEE bond concept which means the budget he'll prepare for the next governor will have more U.S. 95 projects in it. Toss in his many visits to North Idaho already, his buck-stops-here attitude, and his attempt to resolve the Indian gas tax controversy -- and you have plenty of reason to like this guy.

Conclusions 1991-2000

Since the project was launched, we have written about 20 of the most important industries of the Russian economy. These are the chemical industry, ferrous metallurgy, the food industry, the auto industry, nonferrous metallurgy, the oil industry, air transport, light industry, the power industry, water transport, the gas industry, the military-industrial complex, banking, mass media and advertising, telecommunications, railway transport, the forest industry, the coal industry, show business, and the engineering industry. The report on each industry includes its history, the situation in the industry today, and its prospects. We have also defined the term "oligarch."

Scottish writer wins top Costa book award

Scottish writer and standup comedian A.L. Kennedy has won Britain's Costa Book of the Year Award for Day, a novel about a war veteran who works as an extra on a war film.

Joanna Trollope, a British writer who chaired the jury that chose the book, called it "perfectly, beautifully written."

"(It's) very witty, very lyrical, it's quite dark," Trollope said. "Her style is arresting. There's a shadow of James Joyce in it."

Kennedy has created a character who remembers the Second World War as the best period of his life and tries to reclaim the person he was during the fighting by taking a job in a war film.

"An exceptional feat of research and an astonishing effort of the imagination, A.L. Kennedy's Day is both terrifying and hilarious," the jury said in its citation.
