Unpopulated, 1-House Texas Town 'Sold'

Someone in Italy placed the winning bid of $3.8 million on Friday for an unpopulated, one-house Texas town auctioned online.

No one lives permanently in the 13-acre town of Albert, about 60 miles north of San Antonio, but the tavern created from the frame of the old general store is open on weekends.

The town also includes a pavilion, an 85-year-old dance hall, a tractor shed, a three-bedroom house, plus peach and pecan orchards.

But before town owner Bobby Cave signs the deed over, he must ensure the eBay bid is legitimate. Cave said that unlike the usual items bought through eBay, there are no contractual obligations when it comes to real estate.

"There's just not any way to insist that a guy from Italy write me a check for three million," said Cave, 47, an Austin real estate agent.

Ramesh saves Panday

He said Panday was thinking of exercising his right to give evidence and to call witnesses. But Maharaj said he was handicapped as he had not seen the transcripts of the evidence.

Maharaj said he would need an adjournment to peruse the transcripts before giving proper advice to his clients. He pointed out that the prosecution was led from the very start by a Queens Counsel (Sir Timothy Cassel QC), while the Pandays did not have that facility.

Maharaj said the Pandays could not have afforded senior counsel before because of other matters he had pending in court. He asked for an adjournment of six weeks to peruse the transcripts and advise his clients.

He found that his request was not unreasonable and expressed his regret from interrupting the courts schedule which was to complete the case yesterday.

Creflo Dollar resigned from the regents, and Benny Hinn is now a "regent emeritus" with no voting power.

The evangelist Creflo Dollar has resigned from the Oral Roberts University board of regents, and another evangelist, Benny Hinn, has lost his status as a voting mem ber of the board.

ORU's spokesman Jeremy Burton confirmed Wednesday that Dollar had resigned and that Hinn had been named a "regent emeritus" without a vote on the board.

Both refused last week to respond to a Senate inquiry into lavish spending by evangelists.

A Canadian businessman, Richard Pearson, has been named to ORU's board of business regents.

Outlet mall weds prime location, Grand Prairie's need for retail

When the City Council agreed this week to allow Prime Retail to build a factory outlet mall in Grand Prairie's southern sector, both parties were as giddy as newlyweds.

"You better be excited about this because all of you have wives," Mayor Pro Tem Ruthe Jackson told her fellow council members about the new shopping prospects.

The marriage joins Prime Retail's need for an attractive marketplace for high-end fashion with Grand Prairie's need for more retail. About 83 percent of the city's property-tax base is residential.

The new outlet mall is expected to attract 3 million to 5 million visitors a year.

Giancarlo Filartiga described the wooing process, which involved studying statistics such as tourism traffic, residents' income and the access to major roadways.
