Unpopulated, 1-House Texas Town 'Sold'

Someone in Italy placed the winning bid of $3.8 million on Friday for an unpopulated, one-house Texas town auctioned online.

No one lives permanently in the 13-acre town of Albert, about 60 miles north of San Antonio, but the tavern created from the frame of the old general store is open on weekends.

The town also includes a pavilion, an 85-year-old dance hall, a tractor shed, a three-bedroom house, plus peach and pecan orchards.

But before town owner Bobby Cave signs the deed over, he must ensure the eBay bid is legitimate. Cave said that unlike the usual items bought through eBay, there are no contractual obligations when it comes to real estate.

"There's just not any way to insist that a guy from Italy write me a check for three million," said Cave, 47, an Austin real estate agent.

Harris still in office after conviction

Harris' office staff confirmed he was in the office Thursday. He did not return phone calls.

A federal judge in Natchez sentenced Harris to serve six years in jail and three years probation. Judge David Bramlette allowed Harris to report for his sentence in January to spend time with his family, a blind father and an ailing mother.

Under the law, Harris could have been sentenced to a maximum of 70 years in prison and a fine of $1.75 million.

No fine was levied because Bramlette determined Harris was not in a position to pay a fine.

Harris will be allowed to serve his sentence in Yazoo City as to be close to his Jefferson County home.

Soundoff: Higher Taxes For Transit

I don't understand why they haven't really considered raising the fares to cover some of the shortfall. They spoke about raising them in the last doomsday situation. Why not now? It seems a bit unfair to raise taxes. That means that people who do not use the CTA will be paying for something they don't use. I depend on the CTA, therefore I should carry more of the burden to keep it running. ---Gabriel Carrasquillo

I don't want to sound cold, but just like nobody would pay higher taxes to fund taxi cabs, we shouldn't have to fund metra or pace. If we use it, pay the price you need to pay to ride it. It needs to be self sufficiant. -- John

Those people that do not have access to the transit system should not pay for what they do not use.

Tiffany, Hermes Lead Luxury Downtown

When Tiffany & Co. opens its new downtown store at 37 Wall St., its signature blue boxes with white ribbons will join a growing mix of high-end shopping bags sprouting along the area's narrow streets.

Together with the trademark orange bags from the recently opened Herms store, the infusion of new color portends a transformation of retail in the historic financial district, where high-end jewelers and clothiers burgeon amid a changing downtown.

The elaborate ribbon cutting planned for Wednesday a breakfast at Tiffany's termed a "Founding Ceremony" in the invitation seemed almost unthinkable a few years ago, when middle-end retailers and office space filled the street levels of Wall Street.

Now, a host of new luxury apartments are adding another element to the once single-use downtown area, allowing for stores such as Herms and Tiffany to rely on a more steady flow of foot traffic than the previous population primarily office workers and tourists allowed for.

Obama, Huckabee come out on top at Iowa caucuses

Boy! I did not expect the crying and whining to start THIS early. Such blind hatred for someone because they have convictions. It doesn't matter if you agree with those convictions (apparently enough people do). Thanks also to the Democratic hope of having someone easy to beat. Personally, I think it a sign of weakness to not want to win against a strong opponent. Not knowing the Demo candidates more than the brief synopsis I read on each on, I'm surprised Biden didn't get more support.Mr Obama - Congrats. Honestly. *I* would rather run against you (as a good choice to lose to) than someone I think it easier to beat.Mr Huckabee - Greater congrats for winning in an era less tolerant because of Bush hatred and that hatred blaming Christianity for Bush's decisions. I know you will be a MUCH better example.
