Grinch producers win strike reprieve
The Broadway production of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The distinction between a veteran and a military-retiree veteran is important because funding and responsibility for health care is different for each. Anyone who serves in the military fewer than 20 years is a veteran, and is supported by the Veterans Administration. Anyone who makes a career of the military and retires after 20 or more years of service is a military-retiree veteran, and is supported by the Department of Defense budget/funding. Several years ago, a law was passed that transferred funding for military retiree veterans to the Treasury Department. For some reason, this transfer never occurred. DOD continues to complain they cannot buy enough guns, bullets, etc. because of funding military-retiree veterans health care — which they really don't have to do. According to the Air Force Sergeants' Association Newsletter: "Last year, (DOD) sought, but failed to get approval to double or triple the cost of Tricare Prime, establish a Tricare Standard annual enrollment fee, increase the annual Tricare deductibles, and increase the cost to beneficiaries for prescriptions.

Page Six speculates about the relationship between Hevesi and Council member Melinda Katz. Hevesi's top adviser went from preeminent to invisible, but now he's trying to save the Hevesi campaign. Speaking of invisible, Hevesi won't be partying with other Democrats on Election Night. And a lot of money pours into upstate congressional races. -- Azi Paybarah .
Recession–Who Cares?
The soothsayers have slaughtered the ox and are examining the gloppy entrails for signs: rising unemployment, a falling dollar, weak consumer spending, the credit crisis, a swooning stock market. Could there be something wrong here? Could we actually be approaching a, God forbid, recession? To which the only sane response is: Who cares? According to a CNN poll, 57 percent of Americans thought we were already in a recession a month ago. Economists may complain that this is only because the public is ignorant of the technical–or at least the newspapers' standard–definition of a recession, which specifies that there must be at least two consecutive quarters of negative growth in the GDP. But most of the public employs the more colloquial definition of a recession, which is hard times.

Vatican attacks Cate Blanchett's Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Kapur and the film's Aussie stars, Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush and Abbie Cornish, today faced the media to promote the second film about the life of Queen Elizabeth I, which opens here on November 15. And Kapur hinted a third and final film about the monarch was on the cards. "There's an assumption there's a trilogy. I think I started that," Kapur said. As titles like Elizabeth: The Last Hours or The Final Days were thrown around, Kapur described the progression of the trilogy through the life of the Queen. "The first one was a very personal film about a woman," he said. "She ends (the film) by saying 'I am the Virgin Queen' and almost trying to replace the Virgin Mary and declare herself divine. "So the second one is, if you've declared yourself divine and you're a woman with natural human desires and needs how are you going to handle it? So it ends with her finally becoming divine." A third would explore how she lives with that, and how we as people cope with a living divine being, Kapur said.
