Orlando CNL unit scoops up 2 office buildings

With real-estate prices stable or falling and sellers shopping for buyers, CNL Commercial Real Estate in Orlando is on the hunt for multimillion-dollar deals. And it recently scored with two big ones.

The company, one of seven independent business units founded and controlled by Orlando real-estate mogul James Seneff, bought a $4.5 million office property in Central Florida Research Park and a $32 million, 12-story office building on Harbour Island in Tampa's central business district.

Both were acquired for "well below replacement cost," President Paul Ellis said Tuesday during an interview in the company's CNL Center II headquarters in downtown Orlando. More deals are in the works, he said, as the company looks to put its capital to work now that more bargains are cropping up.

Phishing As A Service, Part II

Now you no longer need an in with the international Storm syndicate to outsource your phishing attacks. On InformationWeek, George Hulme reports on a DIY phishing service:

"The service automatically generates text for the phishing emails that target various Web mail and social networks, including Facebook, Hi5, Orkut, and others...

While this is more of a novelty, and reminiscent of the old-time virus construction kits from the early 1990s, it reveals how heavily social networks will be targeted going forward."

Hulme predicts a significant attack through the social networks. I still think it's coming from instant messaging.

SOUTHERN NEVADA ECONOMY: Indicators plummet to '07 low Economist who ...

The downturn in Las Vegas' real estate market, combined with a 5.4 percent decline in gaming revenue for August, dragged the Southern Nevada Index of Leading Economic Indicators to its lowest level of the year.

The October index, based on August data, dropped to 132.67, with six of the 10 series contributing negatively. Its down from 133.46 in September, but remains slightly higher than a year ago. The index has relinquished its gain from the beginning of the year, when it stood at 132.98.

"The Las Vegas economy in August performed at less than a stellar rate," economist Keith Schwer of the Center for Business and Economic Research said.

The index, compiled by the research center at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is a six-month economic forecast from the month of the data, based on a net-weighted average of each series after adjustment for seasonal variation.

Talk of the bay: As cash flows in, specialty banks line up

Chalk up another heavyweight wealth-management player coming to the Tampa Bay area to cater to the growing money elite. Bank of New York Mellon - the name created last year from the merger of Bank of New York (Alexander Hamilton's bank) and Mellon Bank (Andrew Mellon's bank) - today will announce plans to open its first area office in downtown Tampa. The office will be run by veteran wealth manager Ray Ifert, who in turn reports to Florida west coast regional director Paul Dresselhaus (a name wealthy readers may recall from the 1992 opening of the first Northern Trust office in St. Petersburg). It will be Bank of New York Mellon wealth management's 21st office statewide.

Florida confidence recesses further

Floridians are feeling as glum as they did in the recession of the early 1990s.

Going Against The Curve

There's a big opening for a top-tier "anti-comprehensive" immigration candidate in the Republican presidential field as well as in the Democratic field, Ramesh Ponnuru notes. ... P.S.: Of the Big Six candidates, zero oppose semi-amnesty, apparently. That seems out of kilter. ... [But Ryan Sager says "immigration is an absolute non-issue in presidential elections ... If there were a significant constituency prepared to vote just on immigration, Tom Tancredo would actually register in the polls.-ed. The night is young. Sager adds "Tancredo will probably be the Republicans' Mike Gravel" in tomorow's debate, "so it should at least be fun to watch"-ed. The MSM is certainly primed to portray Tancredo as a kook. But Gravel had to act wild in the Dem debate because he was trying to out-antiwar eight other candidates who were also antiwar.
