| Whiteside could be big downtown draw
It was like flying first class.I realize these memories are not part of many of you now living in Corvallis, but I know there can be a real appreciation for its history if only it is correctly preserved.I want to see this theater be a movie theater again and not another strip mall. I want to see ownership by people who realize the theater's historic value to this community.Visit the Benton County Historical Society Museum in Philomath to see the beautiful exhibit telling of the Whiteside's history. Then you will understand the need to save this theater for generations to come.Kathy Herdt-BerbevinSalemWomen's basketball deserves supportI know the difference between men's and women's sports. I really do.Mine is the first generation to dip our big toe into Title Nine. Discrepancies between the sexes in competitive sports are many.
Pearl Brewery's Brew House easier to see
The Pearl Brewery's main attraction, the five-story Brew House, is now easier for spectators to see. Silver Ventures, the company redeveloping the site, has removed the scaffolding from the 114-year-old building. The scaffolding was being used to stabilize the 13,863-square-foot building, which was built in 1894, as it underwent renovations to help return the old factory to its original state. "It blew me away," Bill Shown, managing director of real estate with Silver Ventures, said when he saw the renewed project up close. Renovations included stabilizing the roof, exterior and masonry. The Brew House also had years of paint that had been added to the building and that had to be stripped off before the original colors could be repainted.
Letter to Our European Friends
We may have a deep recession in the not too distant future. Is this the moment to be pitching the voters on "business savvy"? Rudy Giuliani is a wonderful person to have around during a tragedy. His campaign promise is that there will be a tragedy every week. As for Fred Thompson, he didn't have much impact. Yes, he's a Republican who was seen on TV a lot. But so was Scooter Libby. Mike Huckabee lost some support among the hard-core fundamentalists when Bible Belt denizens realized that John McCain was the only candidate with enough guts to really handle rattlesnakes at church. The rest of the public remains alert to the fact that evangelical Christianity, as a movement, has two faces--the Moral Majority face and the Tammy Faye Bakker face. Let us not forget Ron Paul who is very popular--with people who stay up all night in Ayn Rand chatrooms, bury Krugerrands in the yard, and think the Trilateral Commission causes sub-prime mortgage foreclosures.
Home prices slip in October as inventory swells
It's becoming a classic buyer's market across Western Washington, with plenty of homes available and prices slipping slightly in some places, according to the Northwest Multiple Listing Service's October home sales report released today. There were 14,240 single family homes and condominiums on the market last month in King County, about 44 percent more than a year ago. Prices, meanwhile, dropped about 1 percent from a median of $391,300 a year ago to $387,500 in October. In Snohomish County, the number of homes listed increased even more in October compared with last year, rising 51.6 percent to 6,857. Median home prices in that county increased 5.8 percent to $352,874, according to the report. Median means half the homes sold for more, half sold for less.
Home Front: Affordability gap - Is Sacramento tempting more Bay Area ...
Not so long ago, Sacramento-area home prices were miracles to behold in the eyes of Bay Area and Los Angeles residents. Oh, the wonders here of a sprawling, three-bedroom home for the same price as a tiny, one-bedroom condo there. That allure of lower-priced homes drew plenty of transplants to the Sacramento region earlier this decade. But as housing values began soaring, that affordability began disappearing. Well, look again. Those days are coming back. .
