| Tax breaks can help with college costs
Here are education tax benefits for 2007. You can claim them for qualifying education expenses for yourself, your spouse or a dependent for whom you claim an exemption on your tax return. You can't take any of them if your filing status is married filing separately. Tax credits: There are two. Calculate them using Form 1098-T, which a college must send every enrolled student by the end of January. To claim a credit, attach Form 8863 to your 1040 or 1040A form. The Hope credit, worth up to $1,650 per student in 2007, can be taken only in the first two years of post-secondary education, providing the student is enrolled at least half time. For each student you can claim 100 percent of the first $1,100 in qualified education expenses and 50 percent of the next $1,100.
Monday wild card
I try to keep up with the blog, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know what I'm talking about when it comes to Gozzer Ranch yacht wars or Marty Fortier. I'm doing this in addition to other work, so I'm not able to spend much time crusing around looking for things to post. And so - your help this week is crucial to keeping the blog flowing. Don't be shy about suggesting items to post, and please don't worry about insulting my intelligence or whatever by explaining at length why a particular post is noteworthy. This is your community, after all. Drop me a line at kenp@spokesman.com. Portrait of DFO courtesty of Brodh2o. .
Michelle's Movie Halted
Michelle Williams is taking some time out. This lady has had a lot to deal with, so this latest news is good for her. The word is bosses on her latest flick, Blue Valentine, have put filming on hold while the actress copes with the death of her ex, Heath Ledger. A source connected with the film told People: "We will hold off until she is ready. "The production is in the process of sorting it out in respect to her." Production on the film was set to start on 25th February, but has been moved back to an indefinite date. "We're hoping she will still come back and do the film and are happy to wait." We're glad to hear that they've been so understanding. .
Clinton Wins Primary But No Delegates
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - Hillary Rodham Clinton's poll closing rally in Florida had all the trappings of a primary win. The only thing missing were the delegates. The New York senator, fresh off her lopsided loss to rival Barack Obama in South Carolina, sought some momentum Tuesday in a Florida contest that drew no candidates and no campaigning. Last year, the national party stripped Florida of its delegates as punishment for moving its primary ahead of Feb. 5 and the candidates pledged to bypass the state. At stake Tuesday were 185 delegates. Still, Clinton winked at that pledge, holding two closed fundraisers in recent days and scheduling a rally with supporters after the polls closed in Florida.
CA Retirement fund to buy 275 million stake in Silver Lake Partners
An announcement may come as soon as today, said the person, who declined to be named because the talks are secret. The stake is worth about $275 million, valuing Menlo Park, California-based Silver Lake at $2.75 billion, the New York Times reported earlier today, citing unidentified people briefed on the deal. Calpers, which covers the benefits of more than 1.5 million Californian state and local government employees, has more than 400 private equity investments. Sacramento, California-based Calpers plans to reduce that number by concentrating assets in fewer fund managers. The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) provides pension fund, healthcare and other retirement services for approximately 1.5 million California public employees. As of October 2007, it owns $254.8 billion worth of stock, bonds, funds, private equity and real estate.
Dreaming the impossible dream
The County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania apparently is following the adage that if you're going to ask for something, might as well make it something big. The association dropped its list of spending priorities for 2008 on state lawmakers today. Here are the big tickets the group would like to address, all with a big price tag: roads, bridges and transit; a new law to lessen overcrowding in county jails; new options for counties to raise funds for county programs besides a county property tax, the only current option in most counties; new ways to enhance 911 services; a new recycling fee for counties; and more power to preserve state farmland, such as granting tax breaks. Dave Coder, Greene County commissioner and president of the CCAP, said counties are responsible for maintaining 4,000 bridges in the state, but Act 44 of 2007, the transportation funding act, provided only $5 million more in bridge funding, for a total of $40 million.
