Miami Beach's Epicure to expand

Miami Beach's Epicure Market is about to take its fresh-baked breads, homemade soups and prepared foods on the road.

The gourmet market, a Miami Beach institution for more than 60 years, will be one of the key tenants for a new mixed-use development two blocks west of Miami's Brickell Avenue. Epicure will anchor the ground floor of the Off Brickell project, including a full-service market and sit-down restaurant.

The project, by developer Harvey Taylor, will also include a Hilton Garden Inn with 213 rooms, a 150,000-square-foot office building and small retail shops.

The Brickell location also launches Epicure's new plans to expand around South Florida. Next up: the likely conversion of the Rascal House restaurant in Sunny Isles into an Epicure Market.

The plan includes repealing a rule that prevents companies from owning both a newspaper and a television or radio station in the same city. This rollback would allow one company to virtually control freedom of the press in entire cities, regions, and even states.

If Martin's plan is successful and local media ownership rules are relaxed, moguls like Australian tabloid king Rupert Murdoch or Chicago businessman and prospective Tribune Company owner Samuel Zell will be able to enter a media market and buy the daily newspaper, the eight biggest radio stations, the big television stations, the alternative newspapers, and virtually any other outlet they choose.

Not only does Martin intend to rewrite the rules; he plans to do it quickly. The New York Times reported that Martin is secretly circulating a timeline to have the rule changed by Christmas.

Why do you want to be a judge? It's something I've considered all my life. I'm a great advocate for my clients but I think my real talent is bringing people together. I want people who come to my courtroom to feel things were handled fairly and they were listened to.
There were several judicial openings this year. Why did you pick this race? I think you should go for a position you think you are best qualified for. Right now, in my career, that's county court. It's the people's court, the court where you have the most face-to-face time with people.
What should people expect out of a county court judge? I like to quote something Justice [Anthony] Kennedy said: "Judges are people who make decisions other people don't want to make."
What qualities have you admired in other judges? What qualities have bothered you? It's really important to have respect for everyone's schedule and stay on time.
