Vacation home market attracting developers, second-home buyers

In West Virginia's Canaan Valley, the highest plateau east of the Rockies, Joe Beam is building vacation homes for fellow pilots, with a lighted 3,000-foot runway just outside the front door. Atop the New River Gorge near Fayetteville, at least three developers are targeting home buyers who enjoy rock climbing, rafting and hiking. And on 7,000 acres surrounding the legendary Greenbrier resort, builders have erected multimillion-dollar mansions for the wealthiest 1 percent of buyers. When it comes to variety, value and unique attractions, developers say West Virginia has a lot to offer second-home buyers, so they're targeting a segment of the real estate market that is still doing well. Their projects are often near tourism destinations including ski resorts and federally protected park lands.

Faces of the Valley - Matt Lanza

There are individuals who don't fall off the beaten path'they actively leap from it, not content to travel the expected road, and instead choosing to lay down their own. More often than not, these are the people who build extraordinary lives without having planned them. Matt Lanza is one of those individuals. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he learned a strong work ethic and a sense of diversity from his father, a bricklayer. A Jack of all trades, the elder Lanza instilled in his son an interest in mechanics and an insatiable curiosity. 'He could do everything, and I learned everything from him'ĶI had wonderful parents.' In March of 1933, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit Southern California, the most severe damage occurring in the Long Beach and Los Angeles areas. It was one of the most disastrous and costly earthquakes in the history of the state at the time, devastating the region and leaving communities in dire need of restoration.

Zell Miller to visit Arkansas

Ol' Zell will fire'em up for bigotry like no one else.

Is the divorce rate 50%? If it is, whose fault is it? Gays? Nah. It's because of straight people, not because of gays. Gays can't even get involved. The only way letting gays marry could affect straight marriage is if straight people protested gay marriage by getting divorces.

I have to echo what someone else said. Conservatives can raise tent thumpin' hell about sex. And then give you all the particulars...gory details...etc. Beats anything I've ever seen. I'll lay wager GetReal and his ilk knows more in rumor than any gay man about what goes on in a gay bedroom. They hear it from their "straight" buddies. All the particulars...gory details.

Marriage is a legal institution, not a religious one.

Rodriguez offers to pay portion of buyout; sides still trying to ...

In the latest court filing, Rodriguez's attorneys wrote: "The amount of the Letter of Credit is equal to the maximum liquidated damages provision [penalty] at the date of termination provided in the first amendment to the original Employment Agreement. In any event, the amount of the letter of credit exceeds the first payment that Plaintiff claims is due."

Former Mountaineers basketball coach John Beilein, who was hired as Michigan's coach last April, paid West Virginia $1.5 million to buy out the final five years of his contract. The amount was $1 million less than the penalty called for in Beilein's contract, which ran through the 2012 season.

Dan Gross: Cabaret coming to Morris House

CABARET IS the name of the restaurant that Neil Stein and partners are hoping to bring to the Morris House Hotel (225 S. 8th).

Stein is partnered up with Lindsay Ratkovich, a real-estate developer and daughter of Los Angeles real-estate titan Wayne Ratkovich, and Morris House owners Michael DiPaolo and Gene LeFevre. As the name suggests, says Lindsay Ratkovich, Cabaret will be "a space designed to entertain," and the food will be "American-Parisian bistro cuisine." Look for red decor and a piano bar as part of the restaurant.

* The Tap Room will open

Thursday night at Four Points by Sheraton, formerly the Doubletree Club (Boulevard & Grant). It's open from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily. Joseph Pergine is looking to showcase local brews and lagers from "across the pond."

Out and about

Billy Joel, who performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra Saturday night at the Academy Ball, substituted "a bottle of red" - red-wine vinaigrette that is - for balsamic on his salad at Brasserie-Perrier (1619 Walnut), where he lunched Friday.

DURST'S STAB AT APT. BUY ON EAST SIDE

The scion of one of New York's biggest real estate families has been shopping around in the Big Apple's poshest neighborhood, sources said.

And with his infamous history, he's only looking for condominiums so as not to have to deal with pesky co-op boards who would invariably deny him, the sources said.

Among the properties the goremeister has been looking at is the spa-themed Miraval building that is being built at 515 E. 72nd St., sources said.

The 39-story building - which will feature massage centers, aroma-therapy spas and skyline views - has already attracted the interest of a number of A-listers, including New York Giants great Tiki Barber, who recently bought several units with plans to combine them into one mega-apartment.

Durst recently looked at a $3 million, three-bedroom apartment in the building and talked about converting it into a large two-bedroom, the sources said.

Music Review: PSO shows artistry, poise in Amsterdam

The latter two were engaged in promotion of Western Pennsylvania to businesses and media here, including a European rollout of the upcoming pro bicycle Tour of Pennsylvania, discussions about direct airline flights from Pittsburgh to Amsterdam on KLM and wooing of business to Allegheny County. The PSO's was a much more public affair at one of the world's most significant halls, the Concertgebouw, beginning the second leg of its Pittsburgh 250 Ambassador Tour of Europe, with Spain now behind them.

With its concert last night, the orchestra made its first appearance here since 2003, a time that now seems so long ago. Music director Mariss Jansons was at the helm then and a conducting triumvirate had not yet surfaced. Now Jansons is running the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, although he was in the United States on tour and could not attend the concert.
